How might natural and man-made structures cohabitate and be in dialogue with one another?
Inhabiting Ecologies is exploring mycelium - a bio-material that has been investigated for the built environment in recent years as an alternative to artificial composite materials. Mycelium is the root-like structure of a fungus consisting of branching filaments that connects and collects resources to aid in the organism’s growth.

Built for CHART Art Fair 2022, Inhabiting Ecologies we are instead exploring the generative properties of the organism. By employing the behaviour of this fungal network, we are inviting nature into the creative process and surrendering the architectural agency to it. Inhabiting Ecologies invites the public to engage in this conversation through a meeting point, allowing the network of mycelium filaments within the structure to mediate a point of connection and collaboration between people and ideas.

Nature does not repeat itself, but it often rhymes. The timber frame takes on a 3D cellular form reminiscent of biological growth systems. This organic space frame structure blends the concept of column, beam, pillar and butress into a single entity built from 504 unique timber elemenets that were hand fabricated to within 1mm and 0.1° tolerances. These 1D elements were assembled into 87 2D polygonal frames (the exterior and load bearing of which are double thickness), and then subsequently constructed into 14 3D cells that comprise the final structure.

CHART Architecture is a competition for young architects and interdisciplinary teams. The pavilion was published in Dezeen.
